Bill Schnare's entire life has been devoted to the study of music. Although he had never played piano at age 12, somehow he was composing piano solos that boggled the mind of the local piano teacher in his town. How was that possible? Bill certainly was born with some sort of gift. He then began his life as a professional musician in New York and Hollywood in concert with a life-long study of music.
In the fall of 2010 Bill was asked how much of his life has actually been devoted to music. Bill got out his calculator and punched in the numbers. The result was staggering. The figure was 186,000 hours and that is not exaggerated.
This figure represents the total amount of time Bill has spent working at music. Many of these hours were spent studying music. He does admit that some of this time was spent as a musician on TV shows and doing live concerts, and some of the time was spent in the recording studio. Other time was spent composing and arranging music, either for himself or for others. In his lifetime he's also taught over 1700 students, some of which include the likes of April Wine.
Bill Schnare is what you might term a "music mathematician". Therefore a great deal of his time has been spent analyzing the mathematics of music. But his greatest achievement in life has been in developing methods that have allowed his students to gain a high level of proficiency in music in a very short period of time. The knowledge that has taken Bill a lifetime to acquire is delivered to his students in a small fraction of that amount of time.

John B. Rogers is the programmer behind the Guitar Mentor guitar lessons software. His experience in numerous technical fields was instrumental in the evolution of Guitar Mentor. As a former guitar student of Bill's, he was in a unique position to transform Bill's music theory vision into a guitar lessons software that is destined to change the way music is taught.
When asked how it all go started, John said, "I hadn't seen Bill for several years, but one day I went into the local music store to buy an electric guitar for an experiment that I was working on. And there was Bill, my old music teacher. He was shopping for a guitar too, only he wasn't planning on tearing his to pieces in a machine shop. We got talking and Bill was intriged as I explained my plan to bring the electric guitar into the 21st century." |
Then Bill said, "We have some common ground. My life-long goal has been to bring music theory into the 21st century. For years I've dreamed of putting my knowledge into a computer program that would give people the chance to become an expert guitarist, just by learning at home. My problem is that I can't find anyone who is willing to work on this project with me. I've even tried asking the computer science departments of several universities without any luck. Do you think that you could build what I'm talking about?"
It took me a moment to answer. Such a project would require a massive commitment. It would mean that my radical guitar design would have to be put on hold, maybe for years. But I knew that even a perfected guitar would be of limited use as long as the educational methods for music theory remained stuck in the 18th century. After my hesitation I answered, "Yes, I think I can build what you're describing".
It's been a long journey to get to this point, but the end result has been well-worth the effort. Our goal to revolutionize the way music theory is taught to guitar players has finally been achieved with the release of our new version of guitar lessons software, Guitar Mentor v3.0.
